Google Maps: The World’s Hottest Mobile App

Google Maps is the hottest smartphone app on the planet!  According to recent data from GlobalWebIndex, Google Maps lead the pack of top ten most actively used smartphone apps in Q2 of 2013.  Among the world’s 969 million smartphone users, 54% accessed the innovative app during the period of this survey.

Here’s GlobalWebIndex’s top ten most accessed apps by percentage of the world’s smartphone users:

  1.   Google Maps: 54%
  2.   Facebook: 44%
  3.   YouTube: 35%
  4.   Google+: 30%
  5.   Weixin / WeChat: 27%
  6.   Twitter: 22%
  7.   Skype: 22%
  8.   Facebook Messenger: 22%
  9.   Whatsapp: 17%
  10. Instagram: 11%

What does this all mean?  Well for starters, the number of smartphone users is unprecedented.  People want instant access in the palm of their hands and no longer rely on a map to point them in the right direction.  Instead they use their smartphone, pull up the Google Maps app, do a basic search or plug in their destination and Google takes care of the rest.

Speaking first hand, it can be a challenge finding your way around in a new city and state, but having Google Maps in your back pocket changes everything.  The hottest mobile app is my new bestie and has allowed me to find my way around Phoenix with ease.

How many of these apps do you have on your phone?  I have 8 of the 10, and in my world this data from GlobalWebIndex is spot on.  Google Maps is the most used app on my phone, followed by Facebook and YouTube.

It’s pretty amazing to think maps are a thing of the past.  Unless you’re my Dad, you’ll agree to disagree with this.  He still studies maps to navigate and plan trips with my Mom.  He can keep his maps, if only I can get them to text … baby steps, baby steps.
