‘Tis the season for philanthropy

There is no greater feeling than helping someone in need, and with the Thanksgiving holiday upon us it’s an excellent time to get involved.  Volunteering is a great start, but philanthropy also includes donating clothing, supplies, money, love, and your expertise.  Knowing what you value, what you’re passionate about, or the change you’d like to see happen in the world is the first step in determining how to use your personal resources and energy. Your philanthropic gifts are an extension of yourself.

When I lived in California, I volunteered at various events with Visalia First Assembly (VFA), and my life immediately changed.  Not only did it feel great to help the less fortunate, but I met so many giving, loving, and like-minded people.  I realized helping others is part of my mission and I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and watch others struggle.

As soon as I moved to Phoenix, I immediately got dialed-in at Phoenix First Assembly (PFA).  I took the necessary steps and volunteer at least once a month (or more) at Mom’s Pantry, a community food bank through PFA.

I can walk in there thinking about my “problems,” but it’s amazing how miniscule my challenges become when there are so many families struggling with hunger and can’t afford groceries to provide for their household.  It completely puts life into perspective.

Some days I leave with so much joy knowing I helped feed the less fortunate, and other days I sit in my car and cry because the fight against hunger is so real.  Either way, I always walk out of there thankful for all I have, feeling renewed and full of hope with a giver’s glow.

I recently volunteered at the Arizona Special Olympics as well, and other events through work when I’m able.  In all of these experiences, I’ve learned that we don’t know what true happiness is until we forget about ourselves, start focusing on others, and become generous givers.  In order to be generous, we have to do more than plunk some change in a bucket during the holidays.

What we give to others is never lost.  It leaves our hands temporarily but it never leaves our lives.  As it blesses someone else, you’ll reap a continuous harvest of favor for yourself and will be given more opportunities so you can do it all over again.

In the spirit of giving to those less fortunate, you’ll discover a deeper self, an increase in happiness and enriched purpose in life.  Always go the extra mile, always give more than enough, and always be generous.
